Did I mention it was pretty there too?

This is a PS post, but I know it'll appear before the one it is meant to append. Ridgefield NWR was so peaceful and beautiful. Especially since they banned joggers. Just us and other bird watchers.

Ridgefield Washington NWR

Last weekend Nina and I went to the National Wildlife Refuge in Ridgefield Washington. On this site a Lewis & Clark camped and documented the Catholpotle Village. The Chinookan settlement consisted of 14 plankhouses, 900 people & canoes. The meeting was commemorated by the painting oby Gene Ellen. A few years back, the Chinook Tribe in partnership with the US Forest Service rebuilt/recreated a plankhouse in the Wildlife Reserve. Here I am sitting in the door to give you a sense of scale. Big, huh! 37' by 78' Cedar Structure. You can read more about it here: http://www.ridgefieldfriends.org/plankhouse-history.php (Like how does one build a "traditional" plankhouse when your ancestors never left architectual plans and the oral history is spotty at best?)

Sarah and Nina have a Valentine's Day tradition of kayaking together on their special day. What a great photo of Sarah on the water!

Little One Inch

We took Sean to Tears Of Joy Theater today to watch a puppet show called Little One Inch.
Art in the lobby of the Winningstad Theater, where the play was held, includes this sculpture made to make even adults feel like a child again:
Everyone could make a puppet of a kappa, a Japanese mythical creature, before the play began.

Sean & Grandpa's finished puppets:
After the play, the puppeteers showed off their puppets. This is the Oni, or the evil monster. Isoon, or Litte One Inch, is our hero. He fights the Oni to show his bravery and wins, thus receiving one wish for his feat. He wishes he can become tall and magically he does. So, he gets to marry the princess and become ruler over the kingdom.

Lunch of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches was held at Chez Heinsohn after the play.
Here's on online clip about Tears Of Joy Theater and the making of Little Once Inch:
